Professional Focus and Services:
I have developed a business helping people set and meet their financial goals while aligning their investments with their values. In particular, I cater to socially and environmentally conscious clients, businesses and organizations.
My goal is to build mutual trust with my clients by learning their values, dreams, and goals.
My clients appreciate my ability to take the mystery out of financial planning and investing by providing clear explanations geared to individual needs.
First consultations are without fee or obligation. Depending on the needs of the client, we can develop a financial relationship that is based on fees, commissions, or a combination of the two.
At First Affirmative and Progressive Asset Management, we design customized portfolios that are tailored to realize clients’ financial goals for education funding, retirement planning, estate preservation, and endowment growth and preservation. The portfolios are tailored to match clients’ personal values and social concerns, including promoting fair trade and fair compensation, equal and just labor policies for women and minority groups, clean air, alternative energy, water preservation, organic farming, animal protection, and spreading peace and slowing climate change.

Education and Experience:
I began my career as a journalist, covering upheavals in Iran, Poland the Soviet Union and Bosnia, in addition to assignments in Tokyo, Washington, D.C., New York and London. I directed The Associated Press’s coverage of martial law Poland and the collapse of The Soviet Union. During those years, I became closely acquainted with individuals who changed history through courageous actions. I was part of a team that created the video division of The Associated Press in 1993 in London, and won AP’s Gramling Award for integrating the print, photo, and video divisions. I earned an MBA from the London Business School in 2000 and settled in Oregon the following year with the goal of using my background in journalism and business to help individuals and organizations harness their investments to create the future they envision. After six years at a conventional financial services firm, I launched my own business and joined First Affirmative Financial Network and the Progressive Asset Management Group.
In addition to the MBA, I have a BA in history from the University of Texas in Austin and a MA in Russian Area Studies from Georgetown University. I was a Knight Fellow at Stanford University 1993-94.
Community Involvement:
I have been involved in environmental work for many years. I helped establish the environmental studies program at Hampshire College and reported on ecological issues from around the globe. Since settling in Portland, Oregon, in 2001, I have been engaged in local green movements, helping start Sustainable Southeast in my neighborhood. I’m active in the Environmental Justice Committee of the NAACP Portland Branch, and the Community for Earth at the First Unitarian Church. I also am a board member and past president of Open Oregon, a freedom of information coalition.
Personal Message:
For recreation, I enjoy hiking, cross-country skiing, paddling, watching birds and taking nature photographs in the Pacific Northwest. I live with my wife in Portland.
